Going green for spring: Spotlighting sustainable businesses in Hackney

The New Craft House - Hackney Business Network

Co-Founders, Rosie and Hannah, opened The New Craft House in Hackney Central in 2013.

World Earth Day (22 April) is an opportunity to demonstrate support for environmental protection. There are many ways we can show our support for reducing our impact on the environment including by changing small habits like supporting local green businesses. Whether you want to learn how to sew and repair your clothes, buy products made by local artisans in Hackney, or support businesses that put people and the planet first, this month we’re spotlighting a variety of green businesses here in Hackney as part of our Love Hackney, Shop Local campaign.

The New Craft House

Founded by friends, Hannah and Rosie, in 2013, The New Craft House is a sewing workshop and designer deadstock fabric shop. All fabric is sourced directly from designers after they’ve finished creating their designs and would have otherwise gone to waste. If you’re just dipping your toes into the world of sewing there are a range of workshops available from learning how to pattern cut to making your own swimwear and bias-cut skirts, to opportunities to meet other sewing enthusiasts at social sewing events held every Thursday, there’s something for everyone.

Grow Hackney

Founded with a grassroots approach, Grow prioritises putting people and the planet at the core of everything it does. Not driven to maximise profits at the expense of the community or environmental needs, Grow focuses on being a financially sustainable enterprise by paying London Living Wage, sourcing locally, using organic and fairtrade products wherever possible, and much more. Hosting a range of culturally diverse events, live music, and serving delicious food and drinks, make sure to check out Grow if you’re looking for a new local hangout spot to enjoy the longer evenings this spring and summer.

Know & Love

Local is at the heart of what Know & Love is all about. From herbal tea grown in Hackney, ceramics made by local potters, scented candles made in Dalston, and chocolate from Bethnal Green. By supporting Know & Love you are supporting local artisans and artists here in Hackney.

Outdoor People

Outdoor People is focused on getting everyone, especially families and children, outdoors. As a social enterprise, Outdoor People organise wild walks, take families camping, and research the barriers people face in getting outside. In addition, Outdoor People’s Go Green brand, developed with the support of Hackney Council’s Ideas & Innovation Fund, is a collection of quality outdoor apparel using ex-display and post-warranty stock from existing suppliers, as well as pre-loved items donated by the local community, which are repaired, washed and reproofed and sold at 70% off the RRP.
